“People are being very cautious and are still responding to a value message. There’s been no real change in spending patterns. They are carrying on buying what they do but buying a lot less. Numbers are holding up nicely.”
He forecast: “There will be an uplift in big ticket items to Christmas because of the rise in VAT next year.”
Although the Bournemouth department store operator is suffering from price increases in the Far East, Mr Brown says that more young people are shopping at the store, drawn by its fashion concessions like Miss Selfridge and Oasis.
